The basic construction of a DC brush motor consists of the stator, rotor, brush and commutator. The stator and rotor magnetic fields interact to drive the motor. The types of BRUShless DC motors are classified according to the way the magnetic fields are generated in the stator or casing of the motor. Depending on the type of brushless DC motor, the stator magnetic field may be generated by permanent magnets or windings in the stator. In the latter case, the stator windings and the rotor windings may be connected in parallel, serial, or mixed modes. These three kinds of brushless DC motors are called shunt motor, series motor and complex motor respectively.

The stator generates a stationary magnetic field.This stationary magnetic field surrounds the armature, or rotor. The external power source excites the armature magnetic field. Dc brush motor motor shaft there are two circular arc copper, known as the commutator. As the motor turns, the carbon brushes slide on the commutator. This produces a rotating magnetic field attracted to the stator's stationary magnetic field. The current in the armature and stator windings is supplied by the battery or other DC power supply (permanent magnet DC brushless MOTOR has no stator windings). A battery (or DC power supply) provides a constant DC voltage. The voltage amplitude determines the speed of the motor, so the battery or DC power supply is a linear excitation source. Pulse width modulation (PWM) is the most effective way to change the speed of brushless DC motor. PWM technology is a constant voltage source with fixed frequency switch. The speed of motor can be adjusted by changing the pulse width of PWM signal. The ratio between high and low pulse levels is called PWM signal duty ratio. The amplitude of the DC battery level is equal to the average amplitude of the PWM signal.
